10 TEXT WITH DEON BIRKES
BY BRADLEY LINAM
Deon Birkes has been the Athletic Director at Lincoln Public Schools for 13 years. He is well known in the state of Arkansas for his leadership in all areas of life. We had the opportunity to find out more about Deon’s career and interests in our Ten Texts feature.
What has been the most rewarding part of being the Athletic Director for the Lincoln School District?
Coming home and being part of something that helped shape my life as an adult. Doing the things for young people that coaches did for me and guided me into the field of education. I have a passion for Lincoln and think it is one of the greatest schools in the state. I love seeing plans we have for this school come to fruition for the students and student-athletes here at Lincoln. The best is yet to come.
Where were you born and raised?
I was born in Siloam Springs and raised most of my life in or in communities around Lincoln.
What sports did you play in high school?
I played everything! Football, basketball, baseball, and ran track. I loved competing and representing our school.
What is the biggest change you’ve seen with high school athletics over the last 10 years in NWA?
The biggest change over the last 10 years is the facilities for high school athletics. Some of these facilities are unreal and I am proud to say our facilities are some great ones for the size of our school. We are proud to have great things for our kids in Lincoln.
What are some of your hobbies when you have free time?
Free Time? LOL Well I love to watch my own kids play sports. I watch my son fish in fishing tournaments, play sports on weekends and my daughter plays all sorts of sports from volleyball, basketball, softball and she runs track. So, free time, not sure what that is. If I had to say, most of all I enjoy hanging out with my family, going to dinner or going to movies or just trying new things and places as a family. My wife is a trooper because we always have to look at facilities in new towns just to make sure there isn’t anything we should be doing that they are doing. LOL
What are your core values as an athletic director?
Faith/Spiritual (Growth in moral Compass), Integrity, Passion, Service, Perseverance, Excellence, Lifelong Learning
What is your favorite sports movie?
“Hoosiers” is my all-time favorite, but “When the Game Stands Tall” is another favorite.
What motivates you on a personal level?
When people say you can’t or that will never happen. I like to make people uncomfortable with how big I dream. I want to be the best I can be at whatever I do…father, husband, dad, son, brother, friend, AD, coach, you name it. Might be why I don’t play golf much. I was raised to do my best no matter the task at hand.
What’s your favorite thing about Northwest Arkansas?
I was raised here and love the area. I think it is the best part of the United States. I love that you are near a city atmosphere and live in the country at the same time. I love it here.
What is your favorite food?
I love steak but I really just like food and it may depend on where I am and the time of year. I like trying local cuisines and family style dinners.
